Large Food Systems February Module

Saturday 

9 am - 12 pm

W1:  Hinewai Reserve is an ecological restoration project on the Banks Peninsula occupying 1250 ha of the reserve of mostly mosaic native forests in various stages of growth. Hugh Wilson has used controversial techniques learned from nature's example to bring about the native bush of this area. Join us for a presentation from huge and a walk around the restored native bush. This is not part of this weekend's topic, though the location is very close to our other sites so we have brought this forward from next month's topic. 

1:30pm -4:30 pm

W2: This workshop looks at large food systems we can have on a site & how they work together. This site has been designed and managed using permaculture practices & they have built different systems to integrate with each other, from hazel production, coppicing, greywater reed-bed systems, solar energy, animals & people. We will be visiting a property design and implemented using permaculture practices.

Sunday 

9 am - 10:45 pm

W3: Income from Acres - Is it possible to make enough money farming with Permaculture Methodologies to support a family? This question has been asked in many parts of the world, and the common answer is “Yes, once you know what you are doing, and your soil is established.” See how the Collective have started theirs. 

11:30 am - 1:00 pm

W4: Agroforestry design - Is the growing of both trees & agricultural/ horticultural crops on the same piece of land. They are designed to provide tree & other crop products & at the same time protects,  conserves, , diversify & sustain vital economic, environmental, human & natural resources. We will explore the broad range design set-up's possible for this system.

2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

W5: Biodynamic agriculture is similar to organic farming or gardening with ecologically interrelated tasks. It is an integrated, whole, living organism made up of many interdependent elements: fields, forests, plants, animals, soils, compost, people, and the spirit of the place, that can be applied anywhere.
